Prepare for the first class -
1. Get your textbook and start reading. The book is long and complicated so pace yourself. Set yourself a schedule that make sure you are done with reading and chapter tests before the first class.
Remember - "The chapter test questions and final exams are owned by, and proprietary to, the National Ski Patrol and its affiliates, including the maintainer of this website". Use this material for your own education, and nothing more.
4. Vaccinations - for your own health, it is essential that you are current with vaccinations before you start patrolling. Talk to your doctor. Especially critical is a vaccination for Hepatitis B.

You will have access to online chapter reviews and flash cards in the JBL learning center.

As a reminder, knowledge is key so you need to go through the book but the flash cards are a great way to help with the written exam.
2. Read, memorize, and absorb the Northstar OEC Assessment.
This is critical and must be memorized by the start of class. Go to the assessment tab for additional tools to assist you in this process. See the separate tab, Assessment. You will be tested on this your first day of class.
3. Enroll and complete OEC Refreshers A, B and C
You are required to enroll and complete the 3 OEC online refreshers prior to the start of the class and provide a copy of your certificate prior to the start of class. 2023 cycle A

How To - OEC Refreshers
We hope you find the information below useful as we jump into another season of updated refresher coursework.
Part 1: How to Enroll
1. First, go to https://www.nsp.org/
2. Log into your NSP account on the member site.
3. On the member home page click on the menu option at the top that says: "Center for Learning".
4. Once in the Center for Learning, click on the yellow box that says: "Browse Catalog
5. You can find this course in the Featured Learning tab in the course catalog, or by going to the search box at the top and typing: example "2023 OEC Refresher Cycle A Online Modules” and click the magnifying glass
same for Cycle B ( B is now 2024) and C (2022).
6. Scroll down until the course appears.
7. Click the blue "Enroll" button to the right of the course title.
8. That will take you to your Learning Center where you can begin your course.
1. Once on the Center for Learning home page, click on the blue “Go to your Learning Center” button in the middle of the page.
2. You’ll be taken to a list of current learning you are enrolled in. In that list, you will see a blue “Launch” button next to the 2023 OEC Refresher Cycle A Online Modules. Same for Cycle B and C.
Click on that to begin your course.
3. Arrange for a CPR class; you will be asked to show your CPR card on the first day of class. Verify with your resort what they require but in most cases it is American Heart BLS.
CPR certification will be provided for Northstar Pro Patrol candidates.
4. Vaccinations - for your own health, it is essential that you are current with vaccinations before you start patrolling. Talk to your doctor. Especially critical is a vaccination for Hepatitis B.
5. Get a watch which will shows seconds. While digital watches work okay, analog watches work better. You MUST have a watch for the first class.
6. Wear comfortable clothes as we will be on carpet and outside.
7.Get a set of knee pads (you will spend a lot of time on your knees)
8. Food will NOT be provided by the class. Please be prepared to bring a lunch, water, and snacks you will need during the day. We clean up after ourselves and no alcohol.
Lunch break time will be kept to a minimum so we can finish early so NO WANDERING OFF.
