Assessment is THE most important skill for a ski patroller!
Your are the 1st responder to the scene and the rest of your patrol and your patient are depending on you, and you alone.
Do a good assessment and you will recognize a patient's problems, provide appropriate care, avoid further injury, call for the correct equipment, and transport the patient to the next level of care quickly and safely. Do it poorly and these things do not happen, or, at best, they happen by accident.
1. Learn assessment as a mechanical procedure.
You must know the procedures like you know your own name. It is critical to memorize this process and practice prior to the start of the class. Please see the link below to the Northstar OEC Assessment. Be aware that the assessment flow is slightly different than in the OEC 6 textbook
Follow the Guide, NOT the Textbook.
2. Improve your technique by thoroughly reading the chapters in the OEC
textbook.
Once the assessment is second nature, the textbook will give you the necessary knowledge from a medical perspective.
